Long Tom Pass

The view from the top of Long Tom Pass (2150m above sea level) during mid-summer, looking east down towards the town of Sabie perched on the edge of The Great Escarpment (Drakensberg), with the Kruger National Park lying beyond and below in the Lowveld. On a clear day you can see the Barberton Mountainlands to the south on the border of Swaziland, as well as the Lubombo mountain range laying in the far distance forming our eastern border with Mozambique.

The pass is named after the Creosot Long Tom which was a french field gun used by the Boers against the British during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 and used effectively in this area - there is a replica of this gun at a viewsite about halfway down the pass.

This pass provides a “grand entrance” into The Panorama tourism region approaching from the town of Mashishing (Lydenburg) en route from Johannesburg to the southern Kruger National Park.
